Jazz Piano and Style

The piano or keyboard is an instrument that can be played in a solo performance or it can be part of a band. Jazz bands make heavy use of pianos since jazz began. The reason for this is that pianos along with guitars are some of the few instruments in a jazz band that can play chords in addition to a melody or counter melody.

In the past, a jazz pianists main role was to keep tempo with a combination of repetitive chords, but in recent years this has changed. Jazz pianists now days are able to select from a multitude of styles and techniques that they will use to accompany a band or singer. Short and sustained chordal or melodic fragments are used.

Experienced jazz pianists are not only great at sight-reading, but can also improvise chord symbols and adapt to the various playing styles of jazz bands. A jazz pianist must balance this improvisation and interpretation with the music style of the band.

The extended range that the piano provides also helps a jazz pianist with creating unique sounds that other instruments in the jazz band can not create.

Jazz pianists have 3 goals that they aim to achieve while they are playing. The first is to provide a clear rhythm and swing. The second is to play a melody or improvised solo with the right hand. Jazz pianists are also expected to help guide the band into chord changes with the help of notes leading up to the chord change.

It is quite a challenge for pianists to meet these 3 demands at the same time. Most jazz pianists are quite skilled in this art and are able to maintain this while planning unique improvisations.

If the intend to be great at playing the piano in a jazz band, you need to master these styles and techniques.

[NEW RELEASE] LACOSTE - ECLAIR

Another re-issue from Lacoste's stable of early '80s performance tennis shoes, the Eclair features an outsole designed for hard court use and a chunky as hell midsole that is reminiscent of the Puma GV. If you squint hard enough, it might even tempt AF-1 lovers looking for a spring fling. The upper features suede overlays linked into the lacing for support and the tongue branding is an authentic replication of the Lacoste Crocodile from this era. As part of a triple pack, this jaffa is only a hint of what's to come – if it had a cream centre and choc icing, we'd be in heaven. Smash!

"I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" is a 1969 autobiographical novel that focuses on the early years of author Maya Angelou's life. Written at the end of the American Civil Rights movement, the work explores the isolation and loneliness Angelou faced.

Up far too late into the wee hours of the morning, an all too often zone in which I find myself, on one of these occasions, I also found myself considering Angelou's story and its parallel to the life of not only my own, but to many musicians.

As a musician, it is more often than not, difficult to find a true friend aside from another musician (actually, the same is often true within the music community itself). But, for this article's purpose, as an example, non musicians seem to either view musicians as demigods due to their talent, or they are deemed freaks of society (a few choice fans may view us as both...simultaneously).

After all, as musicians, we do not fit the status quo...the "blend in business as usual" scenario...the all encompassing process of graduating high school, going to college, and getting a job that we will retire from forty years later.

No, even if we attend and complete college, then take a job in a local school district teaching the school band or choir in the interest of "normalizing" our lives, inevitably, we will be placed in society's one of two "demigod" or "freak" molds (again, perhaps, both simultaneously) dare we ever exit our nether world to perform publicly to a crowd of more than one.

In my own personal experience, as well as the experiences of my musician friends/acquaintances, if you have been a musician for most of your life, it can be said that your existence within the world of music supersedes your playing an instrument, singing, performing, or composing.

It is likely and, otherwise, a spiritual "calling" that will not let go. And, it can easily be said to have an inescapable hold on you...a blessing in a sense, yet and perhaps, even a curse...much like that dreaded 30-day interval of the silvery moon that your friendly neighborhood werewolf must endure and survive
lifelong without bringing undue attention to himself or herself.

And, it is a unique level of human spirituality that most non artists cannot and will likely never comprehend. In comparison to Ms. Angelou's work, along with our musical talent and the enjoyment of being blessed as a creator, comes a slightly seething loneliness that, in turn, maintains our honesty to our "calling."

Regardless of your favorite genre that you dare not admit chose you, as opposed to your choosing it, you will likely agree that the common elements of anger, sadness, and other related and indifferent emotions can be derived from, at least, one song of any given artist's repertoire, whether that artist is Enya with her "Caribbean Blue" (Celtic), Roy Ayer's "Searching" (Jazz) Sting's "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You" (Progressive Rock), Jill Scott's "Golden" (RnB), or any of Eryka Badu's works, as well as those of many other artists.

And, as sad as it is for me to admit it, I have also found that many artists (including myself) can remain too close, too long, to their music without a vitally necessary unrelated diversion to overtly distract and save us from instituting a "Curt Cobain."

Because, music has a uniquely powerful way of forcing a suppressed (and, often painful) personal history to the surface for re-evaluation and analysis. And, as musicians, and because we are creators, this is, possibly, the reason for our high degree of emotional response to it more so than non artists.

While this article has been intended to serve as "body filler" for this newsletter, it also serves me well as a few moments of self-reflective therapy, as my spirit eclipse's the oh so soothing albeit depressing sounds of Ms. Lalah Hathaway's vocal lead (lyrics by Ms. Bette Midler) that cascade Mr. Joe Sample's rendition of Ms. Midler's "When Your Life Was Low" (it's on my playlist on my MySpace page, but don't listen too often, lest ye fall victim to and become a might painfully enthralled, such as my wretched soul hath done time and time again).

Ignorance is bliss, and I often wish that I remained a non artist who had never learned what I now know about creating music, its mechanics, or its intricacies, such as how to arrange a particular chord inversion or a drum part's backbeat that not only evokes memories and/or emotions that either make me want to soar higher than Kal El could ever dream of doing, or seek the closest gunshop for "El Fin," but which either can draw the positive or negative tear from a too often dry bloody eye.

And, after having self-analyzed, self-explored and self-purged, I too now know (and understand succinctly) why the werewolf howls at the first light of the beautiful silvery moon.

[NEW RELEASE] PUMA X SNKR FRKR BLAZE OF GLORY (BLACK BEAST)

Following on from the initial ‘Great White’ colorway released in April 2008, we can now reveal the stunning second version of the Sneaker Freaker X PUMA ‘Jirozame’ project. This new colorway of the PUMA Blaze of Glory flips the shoe to inky black, with a slash of vivid color that sets it off in all the right places. Highlights include sensual nubuck with turqoise sateen, silky laces, red chunks and poppin’ pink bits, all hooked up with the legendary smoke-tinted Trinomic cell unit in the sole of the shoe.

There’s also a choice of several beautifully designed insoles and multiple laces to complement the highly distinctive sneaker. “This thing looks evil!” says the editor and founder of Sneaker Freaker, Simon “Woody” Wood. And I love evil! It’s seriously the most comfortable shoe PUMA has ever made. Once you put this thing on you’ll never want to take it off. The Trinomic system was so far ahead of its time, you won’t believe your feet!” Be wary of its apparently docile nature, this one is lethal. And very, very black.

Here's a list of retailers below so find the one in your local area and bug them because as always, numbers are limited and you won't wanna miss out.

The remarkable range of electronic possibilities has reached music to incredible levels of melody, tunes and harmony. The devices that make all this possible are versatile and diverse. Devices called Effect Boxes bring about singular effects in guitar sounds.

Octavizer

An input music signal is mixed with a tone that is synthesized. This tone is an octave higher or lower than the input. This is produced what the octavizer does. The octavizer pedals are available as the following models - Green Ringer, Ampeg Scrambler and Tycobrahe Octavia, and many many more.

Phase shifter

This effect created by this device is the sound of a jet flying just above you! It was much sought after in the '70s by piano players and bass guitarists. Electro-Harmonix Small Stone, Dunlop Univibe and BOSS PH-3 are apt examples. These pedals allow you to change the pitch of a musical instrument, usually allowing for a smooth tone.

Pitch Shifter

The pitch shifter enables two musicians to play at different pitches, without altering the tuning of either instrument. Digitech Whammy Pedal and Boss CS-5 are two popular Pitch Shifter Pedal products.

Distortion pedals

This pedal can bring in newer harmonics into a normal electric guitar signal. This will distort the signal and the output is a more varied sound that cannot be accomplished by an electric guitar, just like that. Some of these can produce overdrive. These pedals can either

  • Increase amplification greatly
  • Reduce amplification to create a harsh sound

Distortion pedals can
  • Convert input sound into a very warm output (The Ibanez Tube Screamer )
  • Convert the input music into a harsh, abrupt output (The Gibson Maestro Fuzz is an example of such a fuzz box)
  • Convert input to an overdriven and harsh output (The BOSS DS-1 of Roland Corporation creates this effect)
  • Sound is copied and then transmitted as output, after a delay. The sound can be output as a single or multiple repetitions
  • The latter sounds like an echo (BOSS DD-6 of Roland Corporation, Pod2.0 of Line 6, and ToadWorks Redux are some examples of delay pedals)
  • Produce a little bit of upper octave harmonics (the Roland Bee Baa of Roland Corporation)

Chorus If the delay time is cycled, very short and varied, the ensuing echo is not clear or distinct. Instead, a swirling sound is heard. . If it sounds like many instruments played simultaneously, then it is called a "chorus" effect. Examples of the chorus effect pedals are Ibanez CF-7 of the Ibanez Company and BOSS CE-1 of Roland Corporation)

Wah-Wah This pedal does not allow all the incoming frequency to pass. By operating the pedal back and forth you can allow only the higher frequency notes or only the lower frequency notes to pass through.

The effect thus created makes you think you can hera a person saying "wow". In the 1960s Wah-Wah effect and fuzz box effect were combined to create a "fuzz-wah" effect! Some of the available brands of Wah-Wah pedals are Dunlop Cry Baby and Vox Wah-Wah.

Compressor

The device is more of an automatic volume control. When input sound increases in volume, the compressor reflexively decreases the output volume . And for the reverse effect, the volume of the output is increased when the music played decreases in loudness.

The uniform volume level maintained gives the impression of a greater sustain effect for the guitar . A compressor can help vary other effects like distortion. Some popular brands of Compressor Pedals are ToadWorks Mr.Squishy, BOSS CS-3, and MXR Dynacomp.

Multi Effect Pedals

These pedals allow you to have a number of effects by using one setting. Some multi effect pedals have a provision for the player creating some effects and and combining them with those available within the pedal.

The pedal may have a provision programming a variety of effects and storing them separately on different pedals. (Just like you can define user keys on the computer keypad). While playing, you can choose from a desired range of effects for creating a the sound effect you want exactly, whenevr you want!

Because of the complexity of handling them, the muti effect pedals are generally used seasoned and professional guitarists rather than the novice player. Available brands of this device are Digitech RP200A, Line 6 POD XT Live and Boss ME-50.

A good number guitarists use effect boxes to create distinctive music. Prominent among them are David Gilmour, Daniel Ash, Brian May, Thurston Moore, and Steve Jones.

Music Theory and Music References So how does Music Theory apply to reference products? These days, there are a lot of decent music theory books, tapes etc. on the market, and many of them feature good technical content. There are no real replacements for these guides. However, most of the information in them seems to lack specific details that, otherwise, never really get you to the point of playing your instrument.

For example, many music theory publications do a good job of explaining Key Signatures and the history of music, yet, these subjects might not interest you as much as getting your instrument out and actually getting down to the matter at hand... playing it!

How can music theory be both educational and fun and interesting at the same time?

The thought of having "all" references to music theory... like: chord structures, melodic notes, scales, all-in-one hand held device (dial) was born in the form of a reference dial (see reference below).

"Implied" music theory is a technique that while you play your instrument, you are consciously and sub-consciously learning insightful music theory information, naturally. And indeed, you're having the enjoyment of playing your instrument at the same time.

All songs are played in a key. Most songs for most styles can be played using only 8 chords for accompaniment and 6 scales for melodies or solos in each key. Music Dials instantly show you the chords & scales you need in each key.

The 8 chords in each key you should know...

The 6 common chords come from the major scale notes in each key and are called scale tone chords (I = do, IIm = re, IIIm = mi, IV = fa, V = so, VIm = la). The 2 optional chords (bIII, bVII), commonly used for rock & blues, come from the flatted third and flatted seventh (notes of the major scale and can also be used to play songs in each key.)

Except for jazz, most songs use only major, minor and seventh chords and these are the basic chords you should learn in each key. Experiment with and have fun playing, creating or improvising great sounding chord progressions in each key.

There are four chord types: major, minor, augmented, diminished. There are many extensions of these chord types including: suspended, fifth, sixth, seventh, ninth, eleventh and thirteenth chords. Chord formulas define which major scale notes are contained in the chord (1 = do, 2 = re,3 = mi, 4 = fa, 5 = so, 6 = la, 7 = ti).

The specific scale you use to play solo in each key depends on the type of sound you want to create. Here are the 6 most commonly used scales including 2 for "melodic" sounding solos, 2 for "blues" sounding solos and 2 for various other sounding solos.

Scale formulas define which major scale notes are contained in the scale (1 = do, 2 = re, 3 = mi, 4 = fa, 5 = so, 6 = la, 7 = ti).

I hope this section has shed some light on music theory and how tools like the Music Dial and other music reference guides could assist with your resolve to play better, whether you are a guitar player, bass guitar player, keyboard player, mandolin or banjo player, or any instrument for that matter (like horns, etc.).

By adding a wind turbine to your home, you are providing an alternate source of energy. Creating electricity using windmill power< can help you reduce what you pay for utilities. Consider being able to live where power lines just won't go, or having power during a storm. Having a wind turbine would be a real advantage for situations like these. It's good for the environment, too. Future generations may use nothing but windmills to power their homes. And it could have a great effect on the economy.

Wind energy is one of the lowest priced renewable energy technologies available today. Stand alone systems, or off-grid living has its advantages. If you choose to live or build a home in a remote area where power lines are prohibited or not available, a wind turbine can power your home. Another reason consumers purchase small wind turbines for their home is to be energy independent from the local utility companies. As a part of being independent, or just having that alternate energy source available, these machines are built sleek as well as neat looking. Most have low maintenance. Over time a small wind turbine will pay for itself, an investment well worth the price you paid for it.

Wind turbines are good for the environment simply because they rely totally on the wind. That means no air pollutants or toxic gases are released into the atmosphere.

Another one of the nice things about your wind turbine is that if it is producing more electricity than your home is actually using, most times the local utility company will purchase the extra power from you. Depending on how much power you use, and how much your turbine generates, that can be a decent amount of money. Sometimes consumers buy home wind turbines just to be able to run a generator should their power go out. This can provide quite a bit of peace of mind.

Before purchasing a system, it would be a good idea to find out about any restrictions or obstacles when it comes to installing a windmill power system. For example, some places restrict the height of any structure in residential areas. There might be prohibitions on some types of structures in certain zoned areas.

Approach buying a vertical turbine system like you would in buying a car or a boat. Look over literature from more than the first company you find. Find out how long the warranty lasts on the windmill you intend to purchase. Understand the basics of a small wind system, and even take a look at combining the alternate energy with energy, and its effects. Or if it is going to be the primary source of your home, calculate the power wattage compared to the power consumption you plan on using.

Some states offer tax credits or rebates to home owners with household wind turbines, which offsets the installation or purchase price of the machine. A consumer can check with the local utility company, the utility commission, or a local energy office to find out about these incentives. Or if they are available at your location.

Companies are more than happy to help you purchase a household wind turbine system specifically designed to meet your needs.

Whether or not to add a windmill to your home is a decision only you can make. However, when weighing the advantages and disadvantages, you might find that these lists aren't the same length. It's an investment that helps the economy and you might not have as much out of pocket cash going to your nearest utility company.

http://residential-windmills.com/ is a blog about how windmill power can improve your home.

Jamorama Review

Jamorama probably the biggest selling guitar study program on the net. Over 35,000 people have used it to learn to play guitar. Why? I decided to check it out. Upon purchasing Jamorama, you get instant access to the program. This is key because when you buy it, you are "hot" to start practicing. The problem when you are waiting for delivery through the mail is, you can start to lose a little bit of interest. So this feature is great.

4 E-Books become available to you when you order. If you are a beginner, just start with book 1. As you become more advanced, you move through the program. Players with more experience cam start at Jamorama book 2 or 3.

Some of the topics Ben Edwards will teach you are: moveable barre chords, 7th chords, the different types of sus chords and chord progressions. For scales you will learn major and minor scales and pentatonic scales. This way you can be working on your soloing and developing that area of guitar playing.

I think one of the best features of the whole package is the 148 videos so you can see and hear the examples to check if you are doing them right. Also you can tell what needs more work. This is a priceless feature. It's like having a teacher at your side 24/7.

Along with all of this, you also receive and incredible amount of bonuses for free. Included with Jamorama are:

GuitEarIt - Ear Training program. Worth the price alone. Because any good musician knows how important hearing skills are

JaydeMusicaPro - learn to read music a fun way

Guitar Tuner Pro - allows you to always play in tune

Jamorama Metronome - develop your speed beyond your hopes

I give my full recommendation to anyone serious about the guitar to invest in Jamorama. It's a more than complete package and way under priced at this time. I don't know of any other product that gives you as much bang for the buck as Jamorama.

Are you ready to start learning? Visit the only place on the web to get Jamorama and free ckoMusic guitar backing tracks

Concert tickets are big business and sometimes hard to come by. There are many ways of ensuring you get to see your favourite artists. Here are 10 Tips to consider when looking to purchase concert tickets.

1) Find out in advance where the band or artist is going on tour. Check the bands website for this information.

2) Search the main website to see if tickets are still available. One will be designated the main vendore for concert tickets, so check with these.

3) Join the bands fan club if they have one ( most do ). They often make tickets available to members first.

4) Have a look on ebay to see if the tickets you are after are advertised for sale

5) If buying from someone on ebay check their seller feedback/reputation first. Make sure you know how and when you will receive your tickets following payment.

6) Search concert ticket broker websites

7) When purchasing tickets on the internet, make sure the connection is secure and verified when entering credit card details.

8) Beware of fraudulent concert ticket sellers. Try to find a marketplace that offers a guarantee on transactions for peace of mind.

9) Avoid scalpers. These are the ticket touts that will try to sell you tickets on the street. They are best avoided.

10) Have a look at stubhub.com and tickets.com as possible alternatives to the more well known ticketmaster.com

Okay, so remember, buy early, watch out for fraud and try to get the best price possible. Look at all the different online concert ticket vendors and compare prices. Try to use a marketplace that offers some guarantee on transactions undertaken and avoid desperate last minute buying from ticket- touts. Most of all, enjoy the concert!

Mary McCaslin & Jim Ringer - Strawberry Roan

The world was ripe after weeks of waiting, so we ushered in the solstice with a trip to the U-Pick farm just up the hill. One hour and seventeen pounds of sweet, deep red berries later, we staggered… (in post Strawberry Sunday: Berry Coversongs from Michelle Shocked, Bruce Cockburn, Sarah Harmer & more! from Cover Lay Down. )

In this ukulele lesson you will learn to play some variations to two chords in the key of C. With small means the chords will sound more exciting. We will start with the A-minor chord:

A-minor is an easy chord to play if your ukulele is tuned in C. C-tuning means that your first string is tuned to an A. The first string is the bottom string when you play.

Here is the A-minor chord written with ukulele tabs:

----0-----

----0-----

----0-----

----2-----

The four lines represent the four strings on your ukulele. The top string indicates the first string with the highest pitch. As before mentioned it is the A-string if you play in C-tuning. The numbers tells you which frets to press down to play the chord.

If you lift up your finger from the fourth string you will get a A-minor seventh chord. Here are the two chords together:

Am Am7

----0---0---

----0---0---

----0---0---

----2---0---

You it is time for you to learn an easy strumming pattern. It consists of eight notes strummed evenly of course in the following manner:

(3)Am (1)Am7 (2)Am (2)Am7

This means, strum three times on Am, once on Am7 and twice on Am and Am7. When you have strummed these eight down strokes you have completed one bar. Play two bars with this pattern and then it is time for the next chord and variation. It will be the F chord and the G11 chord. They look like this:

F G11

----0---0---

----1---1---

----0---0---

----2---0---

Use the same strumming pattern with these two chords and play two bars and you will have a strumming lick that will sound nice.

You can use this pattern in a chord sequence like this for example:

Am / / / Am / / / F / / / F / / /

A principle you can use is to see if you can modify the chords you use in order to make the chords and the strumming patterns more exiting.

With a fan club purchase you will get a code that you enter into Ticketmaster that will let you purchase up to 4 tickets during the tour.

You must also pay for the tickets at Ticketmaster, the tickets are not free if you join the fan club. Also, just because you join the fan club and get a code does not guarantee you tickets, you still must compete on the Ticketmaster web site with thousands of other dedicated fans. Exclusive Presale Tickets will be available beginning Tuesday, March 25th and are sure to sell out faster than Hannah Montana concert tickets.

Also, the fan club is the only way to meet the Jonas Brothers backstage. That's not all the boys have been up to. The Jonas Brothers will be very busy this year touring and promoting their new CD and their new Disney movie Camp Rock. The brothers have also just announced a new reality tv series Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream in addition to a Disney TV series due to begin filming whenever they can find the time.

[NEW RELEASE] LACOSTE - CABESTAN 75 YEAR

René Lacoste is above all, a legend. A star on the courts of Wimbledon, Forest Hills and Roland Garros, René was one of the famous Four Musketeers (Jean Borot, Jacques Brugno, Henri Cochet and René Lacoste) who dominated the game of tennis in the late ‘20s and early ‘30s. They eventually led France to six straight wins (1927 through 1932) in the Davis Cup, and Rene became the world number one tennis player from 1926-1927. Nicknamed the ‘Crocodile’ and ‘Alligator’ for his tenacious attitude on the court, Rene is now better known for being the namesake and creator of the iconic 12.12 Lacoste Tennis shirt, which debuted in 1933.

Fast forward 75 years and the brand are celebrating this momentous occasion by launching a series of monotone shoes inspired by their tennis and yachting heritage. Unique to the 75 year collection is the use of the original crocodile which originated in 1933 and is embossed onto the uppers of each shoe. Tastefully executed in a consistent black and white scheme, the pack is a fitting tribute to the original purveyor of cool. July Release...
