Chord Style Piano Is It For Everyone?

Many people have the desire to play the piano, but do not have the time to learn. There are basically two approaches when it comes to learning to play the piano: the classical approach or the chord based approach. The chord based approach can get you playing fast, but is it for everyone?

If you enjoy the classics and dont mind sight reading pieces all day long, the chord based approach might not be for you. The classical approach might be more appropriate. Keep in mind, though, technical proficiency is important with the classical approach - the harder the piece, the more demanding.

On the other hand, if you dont care much about the technical aspect of piano playing and you hate sight reading, the chord based approach might be what youre looking for. All you need is learn some fundamentals and youre off to go. You might be surprised to know that with only a few chords you can start playing songs immediately. For example, if you were to learn only three chords, C F G, known as the I IV V chord progression, youd be able to play hundreds, even thousands of songs.

Furthermore, with the chord based approach you dont need to be a super sight reader. In fact, all you have to do is to be able to read the melody line, thats it. The rest of the harmony is provided as chords. Its up to you to arrange this harmony (chord voicings) however way you want it.

The main difference between the classical approach way of playing the piano and the chord style approach is that with classical music, everything is written out for you. Thats why you need to be a good sight reader. With the chord based approach, you dont need to be a good sight reader. You just need to learn to interpret chords.

The chord based approach might not be for everyone. You might enjoy the classics too much and care less about chords. However, for most people, especially the adult learners, the chord style approach is an ideal way to start since you can have fun almost immediately.
